From 9-5 to Mompreneur
My Story Before Coaching…
For the past 10 years I always sat behind a desk with a list of tasks set before me. A supervisor or manager was watching over all of us. We had scheduled breaks and lunches of 10 minutes and 30 minutes. If we were late to work, we were tardied. If we were late coming back from break or lunch, we had to stay after work to make up the time. And for every mistake we made, we were reprimanded. Nothing was ever said about how neat and well done our work was. Therefore, there was really no incentive to keep doing decent work, but I did because my boss wasn’t really the supervisor; it’s God. Needless to say, working administrative jobs was never what I wanted to do with my life forever. It was temporary, to get me by. I knew I was intended for more, CREATED for MORE. But what? I needed to figure that out…
Almost 7 years ago I was working admin as a receptionist and found out I was pregnant with our first daughter. What was going through my head? Excitement! FINALLY! We had been trying for so long! “But I have to go back to work after my maternity leave is up…” is all I kept thinking. I thought I had it figured out…go back to work part time, pump milk for my baby on my breaks, easy peasy…But all the sitters we had lined up were unreliable…So there went that idea. Then my parents offered us financial support each month for me to be able to stay home with my kiddo for a year. We were so incredibly blessed by that.
So while my parents were helping us out financially, I decided to pursue my medical transcription career so that I could work from home and be there for my baby and future kids since we didn’t really have any reliable babysitters, and both my parents worked. After about 6 months, I finished up my MT schoolwork and nailed a job with a medical transcriptionist who needed help with her work so I was able to make a decent amount from home. Praise God!
We were constantly taking photos of the baby and family pictures, and I noticed how much weight I had gained. Then one night as I was nursing the little, I saw the infomercial for Insanity. “That’s it! This is what I want for my birthday! No equipment needed, no gym membership, and no sitter!” So I told my mom and she ordered it from the infomercial. It was time to get this mummy tummy back in shape. 60 days went by and I had lost most my baby weight, changed my eating habits, and had so much more energy. Now that I’d lost the weight, it was time to add some muscle to this mommy…so I tried P90X. 90 days went by and my husband saw my back. “WOW! You’re ripped!” Of course I was pleased 🙂
I discovered later on social media that there was this one coach who was just killing all her workouts, using the barbell, doing video reviews, and she just seemed so real. I followed her for awhile and asked about the program that she was doing (It was Les Mills Pump, but it hadn’t been released to the public yet.) So I waited until it was released, ordered that and Shakeology (since I was in love with it in the past) and became a coach just for the 25% off discount. I had actually ordered 4 bags of Shakeology and planned on cancelling my coach account that following month.
Things changed. I fell in love with everything…the fitness, the results, the coach team had actually become like a second family, and I loved being able to reach out to others who needed help with their fitness and nutrition. I thought, “I could really do something with this!” So I pursued this coaching thing. That was almost 4 years ago.
So that’s my story basically, how I became a coach and moved out of the admin profession. But I bet you’re thinking, “yeah that’s great and all, but what ARE the benefits of an entrepreneur?” Let’s talk about that….
The number one benefit that comes to my head, FREEDOM. I’m free to take my kids to school, to gymnastics, to dance class, run my errands, get things done around the house, be there for my kids, do homework with them, read to them, and really just do what needs to be done without being pressed for time. I don’t need to get a sitter anymore (although a date night happens every now and then!) I don’t need to put my kids in daycare while I finish up at work. I don’t need a gym membership since I workout at home in my home gym now. I have time to cook healthy meals for my family. I’m truly blessed to be able to do everything on my own time without having to report to anyone.
I have a home office. I don’t have to get up, shower, and rush to work in heavy traffic. I get up when I want to, set my own hours, and go downstairs in my pajamas or workout clothes. I work for a couple hours until my girls wake up, and then I get to make them breakfast and start the day. Really, my office can be anywhere. If my husband has the kids, I might just go to the beach or to the park and work. I can go wherever I want AND I don’t have to report to anyone but myself…oh did I already say that? 🙂
I feel blessed that I’m able to use my God-given gift to help people not only get healthy and fit with proper nutrition and exercise, but I also get to be part of helping people make a life for themselves. A life where people can spend more time with their family is a dream come true for most.
What IF???
What if part of your job required you to be able to take some time during the day and read…apply some personal development, educate yourself, and learn to be a more positive person?
What if your job required you to meet new people?
What if your job required you to workout and eat healthy?
What if there was no cap in how much you got paid?
What if you got paid to workout AND help people?
What if you could work as little or as many hours you want during the week? (Those 80+ work weeks are OVER!)
What if YOU changed someones life…or better yet, SAVED someone’s life?
Would you do it?
What IS an Entrepreneur?
Wikipedia defines it Entrepreneurship as the process of designing, launching and running a new business, i.e. a startup company offering a product, process or service. It has been defined as the “…capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit.” The entrepreneur is “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.” “Rather than working as an employee, an entrepreneur runs a small business and assumes all the risk and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes.” Entrepreneurs perceive new business opportunities and they often exhibit positive biases in their perception (i.e., a bias towards finding new possibilities and unmet market needs) and a pro-risk-taking attitude that makes them more likely to exploit the opportunity.”Entrepreneurial spirit is characterized by innovation and risk-taking.”
